As an app reviewer, I tend to try new apps every single day. One app after another and at the end of the day, I end up with two things:
- A good app that turns into a review
- GBs of files that take up memory
In order to clean this mess, I can go into each app to look for a clear cache option or simply delete it. However, even that leaves a lot of unwanted files in my Mac that accumulate quickly and take up a lot of memory.
I always turn to my trusted app CleanMyMac. It helps me free up space on my Mac, uninstall apps and even boost up its speed with only one click.
Dive into this CleanMyMac 3 Review to learn all about this powerful app.
Developed by MacPaw, CleanMyMac is a great tool for people who are trying to delete unwanted data like caches from browsers. CleanMyMac is capable of doing a lot of things on your Mac that will help you protect your privacy and control your apps more than you can imagine.
*Cleaning is the first section of the app which includes a set of smart app that knows exactly what files to target, files that you won’t need or too old and you should delete them.
The Dashboard is a quick view for your Mac. It lets you know how much space is used and how much is left. It details how much memory you’re using and a percentage of the CPU usage.
It also has information about your Mac model and how much memory you’ve cleaned so far.
System Junk #
This option will scan your hard drive for items you don’t need:
- User Caches Files
- System Logs Files
- OS X Localizations
- System Caches Files

iPhoto Junk #
While you edit your photos in iPhoto, the app tends to keep the original copy of the photo you’re editing. As you know, that leaves you with multiple pictures of the same picture that leads to taking up too much memory. CleanMyMac will scan your iPhoto library and delete only the original images of photos you’ve edited.
Mail Attachments #
Trip photos, press kits, screenshots and other mail attachments take up a lot of space on my hard disk. Running this scan removes all the local copies of the email attachments.
iTunes Junk #
When you connect your iOS device, iTunes automatically downloads a copy of all the apps on that device. It creates a local backup of the entire device and if there’s an iOS update; it will also download it on your Mac. All of these files can be removed easily with this option if you don’t need them. Plus, this option is capable of cleaning broken copies of Podcasts, movies, and audio files.
Trash Bin #
Not only does this clean your Trash bin, but it will also look for multiple hidden trash folders such as the deleted emails or deleted photos in iPhoto. It will even delete files that were trashed on an External Drive. CleanMyMac will clean them all.
Large and Old Files #
Do you remember that old big zip files that you downloaded from Chrome about a year ago? CleanMyMac does and it will help you get rid of such files and much more that you’ve forgotten about with this great option.
- *Utilities are the second section of CleanMyMac that contains a set of mini yet extremely useful apps that will allow you to Uninstall apps and extensions. It will take control over your privacy and maintain a healthy and fast OS.
Uninstalling apps on OS X is not just dragging them and dropping them into the trash bin, it’s more than that.
CleanMyMac will look for all related files, folders and caches related to the app you selected and delete them.
It can also reinstall apps by resetting its data and removing selected files that stores data.
This section of the app is dedicated to improving your OS by checking all the system files, fixing any application errors, reindexing your Spotlight and mail database to improve the search function.
- Run Maintenance Script

Running this cleaning function will make you feel like you never existed. It will delete all of your history from any browser installed. It will delete all chat history from apps like iMessage and Skype. It will even delete the recent items searched from the Finder.
As you turn on your computer, many apps will open automatically. Over time, this could slow your Mac. This option will help speed up its boot time by disabling some of the apps you don’t need to run when your Mac starts.
You also have the option to disable all of the extensions for many apps that are installed on your Mac such as:
- Contacts Plugins
- Preference Panes
- Quick Look Plugins
- Safari Extensions
- Spotlight Plugins
Just like an actual paper shredder, this option will allow you to completely destroy any file or folder you throw in. It’s like it never existed.
CleanMyMac 3 Menu #
There’s one more thing that the app offers. If you have enabled the CleanMyMac menu, an icon will appear in the status bar which includes a menu that will allow you to keep a close eye on your Mac’s hard disk, ram, and trash bin. If you’re running multiple apps and your Mac is running out of memory there’s a solution. A one-click option. CleanMyMac will free the ram and bring back some speed so you can continue multitasking in full speed.
The Menu will also notify you if you have more than 2GB of files in the trash bin. If an app is freezing, you can force to quit it. If the ram is getting low, you can free it up.
CleanMyMac Preference #
In the preference pane of CleanMyMac, you will be able to tweak the app so it can do its job perfectly for you.
Here you can select which unwanted languages you want to delete, what actions you want the smart cleanup to do and schedule a time for the app to remind you to clean your Mac. You can update the app and add a specific app to be ignored while doing cleanups.
My Experience with CleanMyMac 3 #
The app is able to delete GBs of unwanted and unused files to save you a lot of memory, fix issues related to many areas of your Mac and keep an eye on its health.
The first time I ran the cleanup I didn’t think the app would be able to find GBs of data, but it did and it cleaned it all. I loved how it could even go as deep as finding what languages I don’t use and get rid of them. This feature by itself blew my mind away.
If you’ve never tried CleanMyMac before, I absolutely encourage you to do so, it’s available for free for the first 500MB you clean. If you are running Windows, don’t worry, you can install CleanMyPC which has the same great features of CleanMyMac.
CleanMyMac is available for $40 for a single user license
